Continuing their diligent exploration of traditional forms, Simos Kakalas and the Horos Theatre Company are returning once more to Georgios Chortatzis’ rhyming tragic masterpiece Erophile. Written in Rethymnon in around 1595 and influenced by Italian drama, it speaks of love, but also takes a stand against oppression.

Erophile – Exercise 1, presented on Crete in the summer of 2009, was an attempt to perform the text rhythmically and using dance, and all filtered through the prism of Cretan tradition. The actors, holding life-size two-dimensional figures of the play’s characters, executed a specific vocabulary of movements inspired by a variety of Cretan dances.

In Erophile – Exercise 2 the text is deconstructed further still, so as to open up new avenues leading towards a bolder direction style and set design. The chorus left out of Erophile 1 is to be incorporated here, and there is to be a greater flexibility in the use of theatrical expressive forms and narrative techniques.
